Home batteries
A home battery is wired into the house and takes over on its own when the grid drops, silently and with no fuel. It's sold through installers, so the price depends on your quote. Below are the batteries we track, with the makers' specs and average installed quotes.
Compare and size
A home battery against the other ways to keep the power on.
Backup cost comparison
A home battery against a power station, a portable generator and a standby generator, over ten years, with electricity prices for your state.
Runtime calculator
Pick the appliances you need and see how many hours each battery size runs them.
Best portable power stations
A plug-in battery for a fridge, the Wi-Fi and a CPAP, for a fraction of an installed system's price.

| Model | Capacity | Power | Round trip | Warranty | Installed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tesla Powerwall 3 | 13.5 kWh | 11,500 W | 89% | 10 years | $13,055 Average installed quote, Oct 26, 2026 |
| 2 × Enphase IQ Battery 5P | 10 kWh | 7,680 W | 90% | 15 years or 6,000 cycles | $14,290 Average installed quote, Oct 26, 2026 |
| FranklinWH aPower 2 | 15 kWh | 10,000 W | 90% | 15 years or 60 MWh | $18,480 Average installed quote, Oct 26, 2026 |
The Enphase row is two 5 kWh units, the size EnergySage quotes. Model names link to each maker's datasheet. Round trip is the share of energy you get back, and the makers measure it on slightly different paths: Tesla from solar through the battery to the home, Enphase and FranklinWH from AC through the battery and back.
What it costs
EnergySage's battery quotes in the first half of 2026 averaged $1,130 per kWh installed, before incentives, and the state averages ran from $563 to $1,586 per kWh. The federal Residential Clean Energy Credit (Section 25D) no longer helps: per the IRS, it isn't available for batteries placed in service after December 31, 2025. Pages that still mention a 30% federal credit are out of date. State and utility programs may still apply; ask your installer.
HomeGuide puts a typical standby generator install at $6,000 to $11,000, less than any battery here, and it runs as long as it has fuel. A portable power station covers the essentials for a fraction of either. The cost comparison puts all four side by side.
